GIGO

Shocking news from The New York Times: it turns out that high-school students were using their school-provided laptops to play games, download porn, hack into computer systems, and cheat on tests. This suggests an inversion of the old programming rule: what goes into garbage becomes garbage. I'm sure the parents of the guilty students will redouble their efforts to produce moral human beings.

So, now that we've begun to show that computers won't fix what ails schools, what will be the next panacea?

They must not have those laptops with the flip down screens that can be used for taking notes. If you can't take notes on your laptop, what else are you going to do but play games and download porn?

They should probably have PDA's too. Poor dears probably having a devil of a time overcoming that digital divide.

Dare I ask if they have portable GPS units? No wonder they've lost their way.

Why, increase teacher salaries of course! If you pay teachers more then they will work harder and edumacate the little mush-brains much betterer.
[I write this knowing you're married to a former public school teacher.]

I can see a day when schools will have a central server, and a tablet-connector will be provided at each desk. A thumbprint scan will be used for security/verification, and access will be strictly controlled. All of their textbooks will be on their tablets. Homework assignments will be downloaded, completed at home and then uploaded the next day.

Each morning will start with a pleasant 2 minute message from the principal exhorting the students to greater accomplishments. Is is 1984 yet?
