I could happily have lived my entire life without knowing that people are doing THAT in the name of God...

Posted by: Deoxy at May 31, 2005 9:52 AM

That is TRULY disturbing not to mention outrageous and simply blasphemous. Sad, sad, sad...

Posted by: Tom K at May 31, 2005 10:53 AM

Oh that is so bad. Nevermind how many people are terrified of clowns!

Posted by: Crystal at May 31, 2005 12:03 PM

I love it! Of course, the nightmares will fade over time...

I don't CARE if they're for Christ...!

Tony- Off topic, but why did you take off TrackBack?

As an Anglican by conversion and an analyst by temperament, I take a different view on this: at least they are administering the sacrament. Think of opportunity cost... Given the general insanity that has gripped the Episcopal Church recently, this isn't the worst thing that these people could be doing. Just imagine: a clown wedding? clown ordination? And in the long-run, it's better when the nuts identify themselves.

I just spent twenty minutes perusing this church's website, and I could not find any mention of Christ until coming across the transcript of a sermon given two years ago. Indeed, typing 'Christ' into the search box returns pages mentioning Christ Church. When checking their 'about' page, I find an introductory paragraph that makes a brief allusion to their 'Christian identity' before stating that 'Trinity’s identity is as complex as the world it serves'. The remaining five paragraphs describe their philanthropic work, museum and visitor's center. I can't find one hint of the slightest amount of evangelism anywhere in the site. A long interview with a new Rector explores his history in detail, mentions the 'Bible-belt' and discusses his baseball skills, but avoids any mention whatsoever of the Gospel's influence on his life.

Should it be any surprise that a church which is utterly afraid to publicly profess its faith would consider a clown performance to be an appropriate substitute for one of our most sacred forms of worship?

Danielle,
I got tired of the poker and porn trolls using the Trackback feature to hawk their wares. I may need Robyn to give me a revamp soon, with the latest counter-spammerism measures.

Interesting that this comes up next to Jim Elliot's quote...giving up our image, learning to laugh at one's self and bringing joy to others are major part's of Faith in Jesus Christ!

Wow. Thats certainly ... startling. Personally, I find it unnerving and inappropriate. But, my viewpoint matters little.

The Bible says that God knows a man's heart. They seem to be putting a lot of effort into conveying the message of God's love. Only he knows if they're doing it out of love for Him, or out of love for being the center of attention.

I'm often tempted to disparage my own church's "alternative" service (aimed at teenagers and college students). The clothes are more casual and the music is appalling! But, the message is the same and it reaches students who won't come to the other service.

A classic problem of weighting form against content. I know how I'D weight it, but the real question is how will GOD weight it.

All I can say is "oh my!" You're correct Tony. It is wrong on so many levels. (How do you find this stuff????

Hello, Tony et al. Another outrage from an Episcopalian priest (former RCC). 95 Theses, and my what a joy some of them are.

Truly unbelievable.
